Waiting for Spring

in Loving Home

So it’s currently mid-winter, as I live in rural Ontario this is rather depressing. When I was a child I loved winter, it meant Christmas, snowmen, and tobogganing. As an adult it means driving through freezing rain, snow and ice during my 40 minute (each way, 80 minutes in total) commute. Winter also means less daylight and being forced to wear socks.

This year I have one more reason to be anticipating spring. For the first time, I planted bulbs in the fall. I read all about it, and watched a video on how to plant them.

After digging and digging and digging, planting, planting and planting, 30 of the 40 bulbs were all the in the ground with some blood and bone mile. Then Hubby came into the front yard, from the backyard where he was putting away the patio furniture and said, “Why is the flower garden on the left all dug up?”

Me: “Because, I’m planting the bulbs…”,

Hubby: “But there’s no soil in the flower garden on the left, that’s nothing but your run of the mill local sand”,

Me: “Well they’re in the ground now.”

Needless to say the remaining 10 or so bulbs were planted in the flower garden on the right… you know, the garden with actual soil. :) ‘The Befores’

I added a little topsoil with fertilizer and crossed my fingers; I have no idea if any of them will grow. However I have since read that tulips originated in Holland, which is very sandy by nature so there’s some hope yet.

Let’s hope our first garden has some flowers in it come spring-time. As you can tell from the pictures I’ve included, I planted a wide variety of bulbs; tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, if it works out it should be a beautiful display.

Hopefully the 'After' will look something like THISHopefully ‘The After’ will looking something like this.
