Lilacs, Love and a Little Marriage Inspiration

in Love Confessions,Loving Home,Loving Marriage

We’ve spent the last few weekend puttering around the house; doing yard work, creating new gardens, spreading grass seed, planting bulbs, trees and flowers and of course a little spring cleaning.

While I was working in the backyard, I stopped to cut these lilacs and bring  them inside the house.

As I was arranging them, I started thinking about how as your marriage grows and evolves so does the time you spend together.

I remember in our first year of marriage, when we were cooped up in our one bedroom basement apartment with crazy tenants above us, a perfect weekend consisted of being anywhere but home. Our happiest of weekends included dinner reservations, a full tank of gas, an overnight bag, a hotel stay and a bar bill.

Now our best weekends are made of PJs, gardening, Swiffers, DVD rentals and home cooked meals.

Thinking about this evolution, I realized that while our marriage is no longer built around grand romantic weekend adventures it feels much more real, authentic and unadulterated.

Quality time need not be filled with spontaneous events, but simply everyday moments.

We are having this sort of weekend right now. In fact, B is on his way home with fresh fish to make sushi. Can’t wait to hang out at home together tonight. :-)

I love sushi – but our sushi night in is a takeout platter and a bottle of wine. I’ve never made it at home before…. fantastic!

Awww…tear..tear…I just read this to my husband because that’s so us- too! We used to pick up and go on weekend vacations or dinners out 2-3 times a week. Now that we’re newlweds and new homeowners, we spend our time hanging out at home, doing DIY projects, gardening and watching movies at home. It’s really a nice transition. =)

Thank you for reminding me how the simple things in life are the greatest. <33

Thanks for sharing Amanda – you’re right it is such a nice transition. I guess marriage is one of those things that is ever evolving, an entity all in itself.

The simple things are the best! We’re sitting here side by side on our laptops (the geek family!) LOL! We just ran away with the kids last weekend to Montana for an adventure – that was full of simple moments too.

The most important thing is to celebrate those moments, whether they are working on a project together or having a romantic dinner. Whatever the moment is, be there 100% and be together. That’s the best part!

My husband and I keep saying that we’re going to grow heirloom tomatoes but we never quite get around to it. I think you’ve just inspired me! Working on new beginnings, even just in the yard, sounds like the nicest way to grow closer as a couple this summer.

Hi Shannon, love your post! I do agree with you that every relationship should grow and evolve. I think that a healthy relationship goes through changes and challenges, but what’s important is how a couple maintains their relationship. A couple who has shared different kinds of experiences with his partner will feel a deeper connection with their partner.
